palabras RODRIGO SALAZAR
The Latin rock scene in Nueva York, once bigger and badder than the one in L.A. and Miami, has been comatose for a while now. There used to be a good party almost weekly, and the people in the scene were united. This all changed as dueling promoters began splintering the scene and there was a dearth of local talent.
But now, there is a band that is igniting that flame once again. The Fire and Reason, an electro-rock outfit out of Queens, is bringing excitement back to the scene. Their charismatic and ultra sexy lead singer Bella Saona gives a great live performance and their songs sound current, definitely not like a sad Mana rehash. We caught up with them at their recent residency at Crash Mansion downtown.
How did the band start?
Bella: Steve and I met 5 years ago I was in a heavy rock band. We met at LaGuardia High School in 2005. Steve and Lee met in kindergarten.
What are you guys working on now?
Steve Narvaez (guitarist):We are producing a song for Pras’ new CD. “Sugar Koma” (which is on their EP) and “My Heart.” We will be going to Europe also. Berlin and London.
What is up with the name of the band?
Steve: Bella is the reason for the fire. It was a line in a song I wrote.
Bella:All my songs are influenced by mood. Don’t hide emotions at all.
What are your inspirations?
Bella: Old R&B and soul. Paris DJ Toxic Avenger, Does it offend you, yeah, Miami, 70s hard rock, rock kids doing dance music, classical music, Mozart, Beethhoven, Biggie, Kanye West, Thalia, Shakira, Gloria Trevi, The Fugees.
Steve: Baile Funk. Cansei de Ser Sexy inspired me to take a chance and go drummer-less. Also The Kills.
How do you guys make your music?
Steve: Lee (bass player) and I have been writing songs before we played instruments. We hate playing covers. I write the beats on a drum machine. Then we drive around in the car to see how it sounds in there. Lee comes in with a bassline. I try to write the beats Bella is feeling.
What do you think of the Latin rock scene in the city?
Steve: No one is thinking of the Latin kids. Everyone thinks all Latinos are into is reggaeton, but the lines are blurring.
