Gil Gets Kinky About RARITIES
Monday Jul 2

It’s clear los chicos de Kinky have mucho talento because in the seven years since they won best unsigned band at the 2000 Latin American Music Conference, they haven’t stopped touring or releasing amazing dance-rock albums.

And all of that success can be easily attributed to their dynamic sound that includes electronica and rock which is all intertwined with Latin grooves and Spanglish lyrics.

Ulises Lozano (keyboards), Carlos Chairez (lead guitar), Omar Góngora (drums), Cesar Pliego (bass) and leader of the pack Gilberto Cerezo have released another extraordinary album, RARITIES, made up of well…rare and remixed tracks that never made it on their previous albums. Their tour schedule is already booked with stops in their home country of Mexico, and elsewhere on this grand planet including Lollapalooza in Chicago on Aug. 5th.

But before any of that goes down nocheLatina wanted to get the real scoop from Gil, the Kinky master.

What is the best part about being on tour?

The shows!

We know you live in LA, but don’t you miss Mexico?

Of course I miss Mexico, but I carry it everywhere I go, so living here in Los Angeles is enjoyable as well.

What do you think about the success your band has had since the release of your self-titled debut album?

I don’t like to think about it that much. I just enjoy what I do, and that’s the definition of success for me.

Who is the funniest member of Kinky?

All of them except me.

Who gets the most attention from girls (or boys)?

The Cowboy hat (Cesar) always gets a lot of attention.

Since you are always busy working, what do you do on your time off?
Travel

What are your favorite websites?

Cliptip, tv-links, and some art pages.

What are your favorite party cities?

NY, Bogotá, Mexico City, Buenos Aires.

What are the last three albums you purchased?

Von Sudenden, Tom Waits and Digitalism

If you could do a duet with anyone, who would it be?

With you!

Will Ely Guerra (Gil’s girlfriend) appear on your next album?

She will be in all of my albums, even if she doesn´t sing.

Is there a new sound that you feel Kinky hasn't done yet?

Millions

If you could name a Latin star who is a real “Coqueta” who would it be?

Most Latin people are flirts from birth.

How did you decide which songs would be included on RARITIES as live versions?

After we recorded different songs live, we chose the ones we liked the best. But we will love to do a complete live album in the future.

What excites you most about the new material Kinky will do?

Performing new songs live

If your clothes went missing which member of Kinky would you ask to let you borrow some?

Carlos

What is the best festival Kinky has played at?

The Fuji festival in Japan

Are you excited to play Lollapalooza?

Yes

Who are you looking forward to checking out at Lollapalooza?

Cold War Kids

Out of all the songs on RARITIES, which remix do you think turned out the best?

Money Mark’s remix for “Presidente.”

You have really good dance moves (totally serious). Who do you think is a good dancer?

Segio el Bailador, Michael Jackson and John Travolta.

What's been the best thing that you have experienced this year?

Finished the book “La Reina del Sur” right in Malverde’s Cathedral in Culiacán, the place where the story ends.

Tell me the best joke you've got.

I always forget jokes.
