So you are complaining that Broadway has become too corporate, that Oprah and Disney have taken the walls of the most famous Avenue in the world? Well, Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote “In the Heights” back in college, may just save the day. Miranda is reminiscent of a young Leguizamo, a hungry actor with a lot to say. He conceived, composed, and stars in the show.
Onstage, his lyrical flow and physical presence commands the stage and everyone on it with gregarious grace.
Originally conceived as an off-Broadway show, the musical consists of a series of vignettes that illustrate urban life. Directed by Thomas Kali, In the Heights fuses hip-hop, merengue, and salsa to las tablas de Broadway. Not unlike Rent, In The Heights still has that off-Broadway feel (or in this case, uptown flavor). Miranda’s character Usnavi navigates the audience through some of the perils that a Latino must endure in any big city. So if you find yourself in the city, head downtown to Broadway. The graffiti on the stage, the b-boy meet Fania dance moves, and that morning coffee energy will make you reminisce about your own life.
