My name is Facundo Monty. You may or may not remember me from a show on Telemundo called "Protagonistas de la Musica." If you don't, I am simply a new name, a new artist that brings a different proposition.
I was born in Buenos Aires and from an early age I knew music was my calling. My father is Yaco Monti. He is known through all of North and South America as a pop star in the 70s. I inherited his marvelous passion for music, I had the luck of traveling and getting to know so many cultures with him. Every country from Argentina to North America.
It is beautiful to say that I learned from my father to respect and cultivate my love for the music of all these diverse countries. There are so many accents and flavors in the people, in the cultures, and most intriguing to me, in the music.
For a while I dedicated myself to writing songs for other artists; Alejandro Fernandez, Jury, Natalia Oreiro, Claudio Basso., alwasys leaving my desire to have my own CD to the side.
Little by little it began to come together. With the help of my publishing company Peer Music and Gustavo Borner we got together to record an album. We had the luck to also work with Tricky Stewart, a producer with Red Zone Entertainment in Atlanta.
He produced the first single "Ella" and two other songs. It was an incredible experience to work with such fantastic musicians. The rest of the CD was done in L.A. at Igloo Music Studios in Burbank.
In the beginning, we promoted the CD through MySpace and iTunes. Let me tell you that for me all this was very weird. When they told me that we would not have a physical CD to begin with I just didn't get it. But it is the wave of the future and we got a lot of support from both MySpace and iTunes.
My single "Ella" was the free download of the week on iTunes Latino.
I was on the main page of MySpace for two weeks as a featured artist and that generated 40 thousand hits to my profile.
People started downloading the song and they were able to see me working on the CD on my YouTube page. Very different than how my old man did it, but it's cool to be down with all the technology.
As for the physical CD (remember those ;) ), it will be available at all the Ritmo Latino stores in the beginning of February. We are going to be doing in-stores in Puerto Rico, New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Houston, and Chicago.
I recently had the pleasure of hanging with Kat Von D, the tattoo artist and star of LA Ink on TLC. We started talking about our country (her parents are Argentinos) and it was great that we had so many things in common.
She invited me on the show to get a tattoo. The tat I got symbolizes my love for music, for my country, for women (which are the greatest source of inspiration for me).
I met Kat a while ago through my manager Yvonne Gomez. She was going to get a tat from Kat and I tagged along. We started talking and we vibed because we are both from Argentina. She said if I wanted to be on the show, she could set it up.
I was thinking of doing a 50s pin-up girl with a vintage microphone and the Argentinean flag. Who better than Kat to do that?
I was nervous because this was big, being on LA Ink and all. Oh, and getting the actual tattoo. It’s been a long journey to finally get my CD out and it kind of all culminated at that moment, when Kat was doing my arm.
I have sacrificed a lot for my career and my music, being away from my country and my family. So this tattoo has so much meaning for me.
Kat was amazing. There were so many people around us filming and everything and she was so cool about it and nice. To top it off, like Celia Cruz said, “My English is not very good looking.” But we pulled it off.
I was so moved that I felt like I had to give her something of mine. I gave her one of my autographed guitars and sang her a song. Her boyfriend was there, who happens to be Roy Orbison’s son. So no pressure there, huh? The show will air sometime in April, I will keep you updated on when it comes out.
