Gabriel Rican Rodriguez, of Puerto Rican decent, was born in the Pilsen area on the Southside of Chicago. As a kid, he often found himself playing with his older brother's & father's phonograph players, record collection, and tape recorders instead of playing with toys. Something about music just fascinated him as a kid. In 1984, at the age of 13 yrs old, he first saw the movie Beat Street and the movie soon motivated him to be a break dancer, graffiti artist and then later to become a DJ/Producer. By the age of fourteen yrs old, he and his former B-boy partners DJ THIRD RAIL, DEVASTATING DENNIS, ALEX AYALA, and ALFIE SWIFT KID started doing parties around the neighborhood.

By 1995, Gabriel Rican was blowing up the Chicago mix tape scene with over 45 different mix tapes of various styles of music and sold thousands at local records shops, malls, flea market stands and even out of his trunk. This was also the same year he started producing music with his life time partner in crime DAVID DIRZO whom he still produces music with for THROWBACK PROD. During most of his music career, Gabriel has worked for a number of music related places such as HOT JAMS RECORDS, FUSION RECORDS, ALL MIXED UP, AVT CD & DVD DUPLICATION and SAM ASH MUSIC. He has also spun for Chi-town stations such as: B-96 96.3 FM, WCRX 88.1 FM, WRTE 90.5 FM, WIIT 88.9 FM, and WCYC 90.5 FM. Gabriel Rican also had the opportunity to showcase his skills on HOT WAX one of the hottest cable dance mix shows on Comcast Cable with over 1.5 million viewers per episode. Not to mention, his performance earned me a spot on the "BEST of HOT WAX 2003" episode. He was also the former main DJ of one the best voted Latin night clubs in Chicago's history called CLUB 720.

This year Gabriel Rican celebrates his 21st year in the Chicago Latino music scene. He writes, arranges and produces various different styles of dance music: Reggaeton, Hip Hop, R&B and House. Gabriel also is a member of WU-TANG LATINO'S DJ Squad called "THE NEEDLE BREAKERZ", La Kalle’s ROMPEDISKOTEKAS DJ Team, SOUL SELECTORS, THROWBACK PRODUCTIONS, NUYOSHI, NO NAME ENT. & ALOFOQUE. You can check out why he's labeled as the #1 Reggaeton DJ in Chicago as he spins on Friday & Sat nights for La Kalle’s ROMPEDISKOTEKAS show. Currently, he works for UNIVISION RADIO - (LA KALLE 103.1 FM , 93.5 FM, LA QUE BUENA 105.1 FM, PASION 106.7 FM & LA TREMENDA 1200 AM).

What'z sup peepz. This is your boy Gabriel Rican "Da Chi Town Legend" for those who don't know me I've been holding it down in the Chicago Latino Music scene for over 21 yrs. I'm known as the DJ/Producer with an A&R's ear. I currently am an official DJ for La Kalle's Rompediskotekas DJ Team where you can tune in to hear me on Friday & Saturday Nights or during the week. If you'd like to hear La Kalle in Chicago via web stream click here.

Events I attended: At the end of August, I had to spin for an Old School Freestyle concert featuring Freestyle / Salsa legend George Lamond at Studio 63 promoted by WCYC Ent. The event was promoted heavily on La Kalle and had over 1000 people present. George and I also were talking about his new album that he just released this month called Oye Mi Canto you definitely have to pick this up.

I started off the Labor Day weekend in Boston for the filming of New Reggaeton Sensations ALOFOQUE’s new video for their hit song called "Cookie" filmed by the talented crew of Triceptus Studios featuring work from Executive Producers / CEO J. Holland & Crosby Tatum. My shot consisted of a cameo shot that had me spinning at a house party scene. While in being in Boston, I had a great time on the Spirit of Boston’s boat party promoted by La Fraga and LIME ENT. I got a chance to hang with Reggaeton phenom producer Ritchie Pena and female vocalist Ariel from NY at La Fraga Studio. I had a great time and I can't wait till I go back to spin again!

I also spun at another Freestyle concert at Studio 63 featuring Safire and the crowd was so into her performance. She really put on a great show and afterwards did a meet-n-greet for her fans. She's in great shape! The event was hosted by none other than WCYC’s Harv Roman and Magic Juan.

The next week, I was at the McDonalds LoMcXimo's concert at the House of Blues featuring Frankie J, Nina Sky, Luis Fonsi & Jeannie Ortega. While I was there I had a chance to hang out in the VIP section with Nina Sky and Frankie J. I have to say that Frankie J stole the show... he had all the ladies going crazzzy.

On Sunday Sept. 16th Que Buena, Supremo, and La Kalle had the Fiesta Patrias Concert at the Plaza Garibaldi. At one point they had close to 15,000 people in attendance. The line up consisted of Wisin Y Yandel, Hector "El Father", Toby Love and new comer Rigo Luna. It was a great concert.

I spun for the first time ever back to back with Chicago DJ legend Julian Jumpin Perez formerly of the legendary WBMX Hot Mix Five DJ Team for Feel Good Friday's at Xavier's Night Club 4500 S. Western Ave. on the south side of Chicago. I had an overwhelming response after I got off the tables; it was amazing to see that everyone stood standing giving me a round of applause when I had finished doing my set. As it turns out, I am going to be the new resident DJ for their Wednesday Reggaeton Night and also the Last Call Last Friday's of every month.

This concert featured artists such as Rakim Y Ken Y, Tito El Bambino, Yaga Y Mackie, Alexis & Fido, Voltio, Mach & Daddy, Chelo along with Chicago local favorites Kinto Sol & Dino Latino featuring Troy Guy. I had the pleasure of attending the Tego Calderon mini concert held at the Aragon with special guest Toby Love.

I also was in the Chicago PR Parade driving the La Kalle promotional truck along with air personality, Mostro, from La Kalle along with Reggaeton / Hip Hop producer extraordinaire DJ Buddha and Ray Roc from CTG status Reggaeton TV in Orlando Florida Channel 21. Ray Roc and his crew filmed a segment on the parade and I had a guest appearance on it. After the parade, I was DJing at the PR Festival both in the La Kalle Booth & on the Demo Mix stage along with Chi-town’s best merengue DJ Ricky Agujita Perez.

A week later, I got a chance to hang with Caesar Ochoa and some of the heads from Sony Latino / BMG at the Sony Midwest offices for a meet and greet with the artist known as Chelo. We got a chance to view a sneak peak of his new videos as well as listen to his new material. He’s got some incredible talent! What'z sup peepz. This is your boy Gabriel Rican "Da Chi Town Legend" for those who don't know me I've been holding it down in the Chicago Latino Music scene for over 21 yrs. I'm known as the DJ/Producer with an A&R's ear that breaks new artists. In Chicago, I'm creating a new trend that other DJ's are starting to follow and that is to support new artists. It's a good thing to see that you can influence others to support up and coming artists. I'm not afraid of playing new hot music in my sets in front of a crowd of 1,200 people every week. New artists need our support to take it to the next level. You can catch me spinning on the main floor of Club Volkan every Friday night hosted by Los 4 Fantasticos Events along with Chicago's best Merengue DJ Ricky "Agujita" Perez and broadcasting a live remote with DJ La Kalle's "Omar Ramos" from 8PM - 10PM.

Events I attended: I had the pleasure of attending the Don Omar private King of Kings concert at Club Volkan hosted by La Kalle. I got a chance to meet Don Omar and got a chance to hang with him in the VIP room where he was at. There was a line outside of the building at least two hrs before he went on. The event was hosted by La Kalle’s very own Omar Ramos and El Mostro. Just about all the radio personalities and staff attended from Univision’s La Kalle & Que Buena including Armando Reyes, David Miranda, Jesse ‘El Grandote’, Ruben “El Recorcholis” , Abel “El Cocho” and Valeria “La Chiquitita” Also, a couple of weeks ago we also celebrated Ricky Agujita Perez’s birthday bash at Club Volkan. We celebrated 28 years Ricky has been in the music industry. The following weeks we celebrated DJ Bravo’s and DJ Preito’s birthdays as well. On Saturday May 5th, I was spinning along with, freestyle DJ legend, Tim Spinning Schommer formerly Chicago radio B-96 FM for a private party with, Salsa/Freestyle singer, George Lamond.

Shouts going out to: I'd like to give a shout out to my boy Omar "Latino Omarcillo" Ramos. He just got a new time slot on La Kalle in Chicago, from 7pm till 12am every Monday thru Friday. Peepz… feel free to call him @ 312.266.9848 and show him some love. He'd like to hear some feedback from people outside of the Chi-town. I got a chance to meet LDA, Malverde, Notch and Chino Bling and they are all cool peepz. The event was hosted by La Kalle's very own El Mostro. It was off the hook I had a great time. I also attended the Groupo Mania Concert at Club Volkan hosted by Los 4 Fantasticos Events. With the whole band on stage, the group gave a memorable performance. I thought I was listening to their CD; it was tight.

Also, I have to give props to my boyz from Boston, Alofoque of La Coneccion Entertainment, for getting "Say Whoa" released through the Majestic Urban Latino Series for April. They are also going to be on a Universal compilation with featuring 2 new songs as well I’ll keep you posted.

I also completed a new JUKE set on my space. For those of you who don’t know what JUKE is… take a listen you won’t be disappointed http://www.myspace.com/djgabrielrican. DJ Gant Man from the Chi has provided me with the cutz. I also feature his Juke remix of Check Up On It from Destiny's Child feat Slim Thug. It is the first Juke remix to be on a major. So I have to give him his props too.
