La Palapa Rockola, New York

La Palapa Rockola - Named for a Mexican jukebox, or rockola, La Palapa Rockola, at 359 6th Avenue, is located in a former speakeasy and the original home of the “21” Club, the club that Dorothy Parker and her friends made famous in the 1920's. Originally called “The Red Head” it opened as a tearoom and quickly became a popular illegal drinking club during prohibition. During this era many Americans, and New Yorkers in particular, traveled south to Mexico to evade the restrictions of prohibition. They dined at places such as Caesar Cardini's restaurant where the “Caesar Salad” was invented. The design evokes the spirit of Mexico and the food concept of an authentic Mexican Taquería Restaurant. And of course, they feature the best Caesar Salad in New York City.
