Old Town Ale House - Brown, dark, and musty like the bowl of a tobacco pipe, the Old Town Ale House is one of Chicago's most historic and storied bars. Part of its reputation comes from a long and hallowed association with performers from Second City (including Bill Murray, John Belushi, among others), many of whom are portrayed in portraits plastered all over the walls. Speaking of which, this pub owes a debt of thanks to one Bruce Elliot, the painter responsible not only for the framed mug shots but also for a number of orgiastic sexual tableaux that punctuate the rows of notable kissers. But enough of the crowds on the walls- you'll find the real-life faces just as interesting. The bar's situation near to Second City and a couple of art house cinemas ensures an eclectic mix of the well-heeled, the well-educated, and the well-oiled. There's are characters from all social strata to be found in the Old Town, either enjoying or tolerating the incessant waves of jazz that pour out of the jukebox. When you're done drinking in the ambience, you get to choose from ten draft beers and a well-stocked liquor bar. No trip to Old Town is complete without a stop in the Ale House: a true Chicago original.
