Phoenix, The - Red walls, red lights, a brusque doorman, and a small staff of friendly bartenders complement the cheap drinks and outstanding jukebox at this East Village gay bar. Filled to the brim with attractive hipsters, neighborhood patrons, and increasingly West Side boys (much to the chagrin of regulars), this dive bar usually gets crowded after 11 o’clock. A friendly though nonetheless sexually charged, attitude-free environment is divided into two rooms (one standing, the other lined with benches and both conducive to conversation) and has made Phoenix a favorite destination for hip and unassuming LGBT New Yorkers of all ages. Nightly drink specials are offered and a two-for-one happy hour attracts an intimate, slightly older crowd.
