A La Moda: New Year, New You

Five…four…three…two…one!

It’s officially 2012 and that means you can kiss those 2011 blues adios and get ready to conquer a new year. Many of us reflect on what the previous year brought us – the good, bad, and ugly. We can’t help, but ponder about what this year has in store for us. Well, if one of your resolutions for 2012 is to upgrade your look, you’ve come to the right place. Unlike countless other blogs and magazines discussing weight loss tips and the perfect 27-day juice fast, I’m going to give you some pointers on how to spruce up your personal style for 2012.

Take Inventory
Go through your closet and look at every single item of clothing you have hanging inside. First, take notice of any items you did not wear during the previous year. Those need to be removed from your closet and placed in a pile dedicated to the Salvation Army, Goodwill, or some other charitable organization. Second, take notice of the colors and fabrics that dominate your closet. If you have a multitude of black dresses, sweaters and slacks, you know it’s time to invest in some color. If everything in your closet is cotton, why not throw in a cool leather dress to spice things up?  It’s important to get a true feel for what you have been wearing so that you can know where you want to go style-wise in the upcoming months.

Get Inspired
Now that you’ve cleaned out your closet, you can begin the fun part. Skim through fashion magazines filled with great photos and images. Pull out the styles, colors, models, designs, and themes that you just can’t get enough of. Lay these images out on a table and you will begin to notice a commonality between them all. You may see that you are a classic dresser who loves a touch of color or whimsy. You may see that you are an eclectic person who likes ethnic or tribal influences. The point of this exercise is to figure out what you are drawn to so that when you hit the stores, you can have a point of reference.

Get Your Browse On
Window shopping is a lost art. With the internet dominating the world of retail, many of us have forgotten the importance of strolling through your local mall or hitting up new boutiques and just perusing the merchandise. Touch the fabrics, take note of the colors, and try on different silhouettes. You will be shocked to discover what looks good on you and what doesn’t work so well. It’s all about being adventurous and patient. Upgrading your personal style is like decorating a house; it won’t happen in one day. It takes time and diligence as you search for items that express who you are as a woman. Bottom line is, your personal style is very important as you want the best “curb appeal” possible when stepping out into the world.

Go for it chicas and have a stylish 2012!
