If you’re looking for something romantic to watch that has plenty of Latino flavoring, then The Love Potion, one of the films featured at the New York International Latino Film Festival, is a must-see for any date night. It’s been a while since a movie like this has come around. A film made by Gen Xers, The Love Potion is for twenty and thirty-something Latinos who want to see a different, quirky side of love and sex.
The Love Potion is the story of four couples from different slices of life, each as hilariously unique from one another as you can get. There’s the hipster duo, the geek and the freak, the ruff neck and his ghetto lady, as well as the married couple. There’s also Mama Juana, a Santeria priestess who keeps her man in check with an ancient love potion. The recipe, as one would expect, leads to plenty of disasters and laughs.
The Love Potion mainly centers on doomed twosome Rey and Jessica. While they’re the art world’s It-couple, Rey, a successful fashion photographer, can’t resist all the temptation he comes across at work. Desperate for a solution to save her relationship, Jessica seeks aid from Mama Juana, who gives her an elixir that will make Rey behave. While Jessica’s wishes do come true, it turns out to be a nightmare as overly obedient Rey begins to worship the ground Jessica walks on. Simply put, the message is to be careful what you wish for because you just might get it.
The Love Potion is an offbeat romantic comedy that will have you laughing non-stop, but also make you grateful for what you have.
