Jennifer Lopez has successfully built an entertainment empire conquering music, fashion, as well as film-yet could she be prepared for the most important role in her life? When the now 40-year-old found out that she was pregnant with twins in 2009, she, like any first time mother-to-be, was more ecstatic than having a number one hit on Billboard. However, with pregnancy comes a powerful fifth sense, making women more sensitive to common scents, which could appear as wonderfully delicious or downright revolting. What was a fashionista like Lopez to do, who has introduced shoppers to perfumes with aromas of warm spices, ripe tropical fruits, and sensual musk?
In her latest creation, titled My Glow, she chose to take it down a notch, going for a soft, sweet smell that even the pickiest pregnant women could appreciate. For mothers and babies, Lopez ensured that My Glow would be dermatologist tested and pediatrician approved, resulting in a fragrance that won’t irritate sensitive skin. Sealing the deal is a drop shaped bottle with two cherubs proudly displaying their outstretched wings. My Glow already debuted late last year, but does it continue to leave fans cooing in time for spring, or is it a bomb worse than ill-fated Gigli?
Unlike Lopez’s past fragrances, My Glow is the wallflower of her collection. It’s clean and feminine, but it takes a few spritzes for it to last. The champagne hue perfume has dominate notes of lavender, known to soothe skin and invoke sleep, whereas peony gives it a powdery bouquet that lingers throughout the day. While the mid notes and even the dry down of My Glow includes more woody elements, such as wet grass, you won’t recognize it. While white rose and milky sandalwood do intertwine, it’s not the zesty flavoring that Lopez has mastered in her past fragrances. Even fans will notice that one has to press their faces against their wrists just for a faint hint of blossoming freesia or lily, two delicate features that make an ideal pairing for the rising temperatures of spring.
While one shouldn’t wear heavy, headache-inducing fragrances, My Glow should be able make an entrance, much like its creator. Sadly My Glow is too weak for chicas on the go tackling 9-5 jobs, heading to the gym, and then meeting up with girlfriends for a martini, followed by salsa dancing with a potential beau. For expecting mothers, they’ll appreciate feeling rejuvenated with a calming, serene scent that they can share with their bundles of joy. For those ready to hit the town, they’ll be waiting longer than tonight.
My Glow takes a few whiffs for one to notice its many freshly picked florals made for babies and gleaming mothers, but for shoppers wanting to feel as sexy as wearing a string bikini for a posh pool party, they’ll have to stick around for another nine months to see if a new Lopez hit is born.
My Glow is currently in stores.
