Cocktail of the Week: El Presidente

Remember the first time you ever tasted rum? Chances are it was found in a Cuba Libre or the more popular frozen daiquiri. The creamy dessert has spent much time in the evolutionary gene pool since its days of just being made with rum, lime, and sugar. Soon the fruity elixir grew up with the addition of shaved ice, giving it the similar texture of a smoothie. However, what if you wanted a rum-infused drink that’s refreshing, simple to make, and always yummy? Sure you can empty your wallet on a frosty slushie or a spiked cola, but fortunately, there’s one icy, refreshing cocktail that has swooned debutantes and can cool down any steamy summer day. For this week, we’re tipping our hats to one of our favorite tropical treats: El Presidente.

El Presidente, a famous rum cocktail, originated in Havana during the Prohibition era and quickly became the preferred choice of Cuba’s upper class. After all, who could resist a warm, buttery concoction that causes shivers, yet satisfies any sweet tooth with a faint hint of ripe cherries or zesty oranges? El Presidente’s claim to fame was when Cuban President Gerardo Machadao offered some to U.S. President Calvin Coolidge, who declined his peace offering. Today, one doesn’t need to share this suave, luxurious drink that can be easily prepared at home without spending a fortune. Here’s to both socialites and the common folk uniting for happy hour!
