Urban bachata group Aventura and Colombian rocker Juanes were the top winners in the 21st edition of Univision’s Premio Lo Nuestro Latin music awards held last week.
The New York City-based bachata boy band took home prizes for Best Tropical Song, Tropical Album, Tropical Artist, and Tropical Group of the Year at the highly anticipated event, which took place at the University of Miami’s BankUnited Center.
Juanes manage to wow viewers once again by winning all the awards in the Rock category, including Best Song and Best Album of the Year. Enrique Iglesias was also honored for Best Pop Album and Best Pop Song. The Spanish star sang his prize-winning song as a ballad, then surprised fans by performing a reggaeton version of the same hit with Puerto Rican duo Wisin y Yandel, who won awards for Best Urban Album of the Year and Best Urban Artist of the Year.
Speaking of Puerto Ricans, Luis Fonsi won Best Male Pop Artist of the Year. Yet it was Mexican singer Emmanuel who won the highest honor of the night by receiving a Career Achievement Award, a prize only few are granted in their lifetime.
However, the ladies didn’t stay behind that evening. Mexico’s Gloria Trevi won Best Female Pop Artist of the Year and rock star Alejandra Guzman received a Career Achievement Award on behalf of mother, famous actress and politican Silvia Pinal. She gave a heartfelt thanks to her mami and then dedicated the award to her daughter Frida.
While finding out who were the top winners was a major highlight of the night, it was the star-studded performances that kept audiences guessing. Wisin y Yandel kicked off the evening’s entertainment with a performance of their latest hit, “Me Estas Tentando,” which included dancers dressed in black, dazzling fireworks, and a magical presentation by the Anti-Gravity Performance Company.
Alejandra, known as the “Mexican Madonna,” gave the Material Girl a run for her millions by performing some of her top hits while rolling around on a gigantic bed. Does “Like a Virgin” or “Express Yourself” come to mind?
The biggest surprise of the night was a recorded message from President Barack Obama, who greeted the audience with a special Spanish speech, while thanking those who voted in November’s election
