Pomegranates may not be known for their sweetness, but as the first known fruit discovered in the world, they have been the muses of many artists and writers for thousands of years. The deep, blood red pomegranate, bursting with hundreds of jeweled-hued seeds hidden behind ivory flesh, is depicted as a sign of eternal life in numerous Chinese porcelains, Italian paintings, and Mexican embroideries. It is even said that one bite of this thick, hearty crop can make anyone a god, which may have inspired the Spaniards for naming their city of Granada after it. While no one has ever become immortal for eating pomegranates, we still can’t get enough of its unforgettable tart taste that’s reminiscent of ripe grapes soaked in cranberry juice.
The pomegranate has now become the star of many mouthwatering dishes, including frozen yogurts adored by celebrities, steaks, and salads, pleasing both meat eaters and vegetarians alike. However, we prefer the tangy, rich fruit in a cocktail, mixed with smooth tequila to help wash it down. The pomegranate margarita can be found at New York City’s Café Frida, named after the late Frida Kahlo, one of the most famous Latin artists to ever have lived. With pomegranates being known to help aid everything from the common cold to cancer, this juicy elixir can also inspire patrons to live a happier life for many years to come.
