The windy city just got hotter.
This spring, Sofia Vergara, known as one of the most gorgeous Latinas on TV, will make her Broadway debut as diva Matron “Mama” Morton on the hit musical Chicago in New York City for a five-week limited engagement. Sofia will step into the brightly lit stages starting on Monday, April 27 through Sunday, May 24, before heading to Miami and headlining the Chicago National Tour at the Adrienne Arsht Center for Performing Arts. In addition, the 36-year-old Colombian model and actress will return to the Broadway company on Monday June 1 through Sunday, June 7. She’s also set to start work on the new ABC-TV pilot “An American Family” next month. In the meantime, you can get your Sofia fix on the big screen in Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail, currently in major theaters.
Today, Chicago, now celebrating more than twelve years of girls, glitz, and glamour on the Great White Way, is officially the seventh longest-running production in Broadway history and has no signs of slowing down. The show won six Tony Awards in 1997, including Best Musical Revival, as well as a Grammy for Best Musical Cast Recording.
Based on the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, Chicago tells the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid jail time, she hires the slickest criminal layer, which soon makes her the toast of tabloids.
Chicago runs on Broadway at the Ambassador Theatre (219 W. 49th St.) in Manhattan. Tickets are available by calling Telecharge.com at 212-239-6200 or can be purchased in person at the Ambassador Theatre Box Office.
