We just found out that as part of the 20th anniversary for the Billboard Latin Music Conference and awards, icon Carlos Santana, reggaeton star Daddy Yankee, as well as Raul Alarcón Sr. will receive special discretionary awards.
Carlos will be granted the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions in Latin music, while Daddy Yankee will receive the Spirit of Hope Award for humanitarian work through his foundation, "Corazón Guerrero.” Raúl, founder of the Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS), will be given the Hall of Fame award for successfully bringing awareness to Latin radio and music businesses in the United States. These awards were nominated by Billboard’s editorial committee that carefully studies their potential winners before officially granting them the prestigious awards. According to Billboard.com:
“(Carlos) Santana, who was also honored with the Billboard Century Award in 1996, is now recognized for his contributions in expanding the reach of Latin music worldwide, not only within the marketplace, but also into other genres. The Spirit of Hope award, created in memory of slain Tejano singer Selena, has yearly singled out one artist for exemplary humanitarian or charity work that goes beyond simple donation and into active involvement in a cause. Yankee's work rehabilitating youthful offenders and providing basic services to underprivileged youth through his Corazón Guerrero Foundation exemplify the animus behind Spirit of Hope.”
Past inductees into Billboard’s Hall of Fame include Vincente Fernández and Celia Cruz. Raul, who passed away last year, is the first executive to receive the special award. His son, Raul Alarcon, Jr. will receive the honor in his name.
