If you’re a Calle 13 fan and happen to be in Miami, then you’re in luck because you can spend your Friday afternoon hanging out with Residente and honoring an influential Latino who forever impacted America.
Vocalist Rene Perez of the Grammy and Latin Grammy winning duo Calle 13 will be one of the many confirmed guests attending a special screening and panel discussion of the film Pedro: A Legacy.
Introduced by former President Bill Clinton, BMP Films, and Milk’s Dustin Lance Black, Pedro is based on "The Real World’s" Pedro Zamora, an MTV star who tragically died from AIDS at 22. Others expected to attend include Dr. Jesus Sanchez (FIU Faculty and expert on HIV-AIDS), Yuri Velasquez (a student living with HIV), Mily Zamora (sister of Pedro Zamora), Karolin Luna (cast member plays Rachel), Alex Loynaz (cast member plays Pedro), and more.
In 1994, Pedro captured the hearts of millions as the first-ever openly gay, HIV-positive main character on MTV. As a cast member on "The Real World: San Francisco," he brought a face to the AIDS crisis. Told through the eyes of his friends and family, the film Pedro celebrates the extraordinary life of a young man who found out he was HIV positive at 17, then made the courageous decision to dedicate his life to speaking out about the disease. Pedro testified before the United States Congress to argue for more explicit HIV/AIDS educational programs aimed at youth of color before auditioning for "The Real World" in 1993.
Show your support by attending the one-time screening of Pedro: A Legacy today. If you can’t attend, don’t miss the MTV film premiere on Wednesday, April 1st at 8PM ET/PT.
