Latinos are taking over the stages of New York City once again. It was recently announced that The Latino International Theater Festival of New York, Inc. (LTF/NY) will host their annual TeatroStageFest from June 15-28 of this year. For two weeks, audiences can check out some of the top Latin-themed shows that include local and international productions, as well as concerts, comedies, family programming, artist panels, and a playwriting competition for New York City high school students.
“I am thrilled to announce that New York City will once again be the capital of teatro!” states Susana Tubert, Executive Producer and Co-Founder of TeatroStageFest. “Last year’s festival saw an increase in attendance of over 100%, which proves that theatergoers of all ages and cultural backgrounds are avid to experience groundbreaking theater from New York, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Spain. This June, we are determined to counter the national economic crisis with an exciting and entertaining line up.”
Produced by LTF/NY, a non-profit organization that promotes the arts, TeatroStageFest is the most prominent Latino theater festival in the northeastern United States. Performances will be done in English or Spanish with subtitles. “TeatroStageFest reflects the cultural diversity that gives New York City its vibrancy and character,” explains NYC Deputy Mayor Carol Robles-Roman. Best of all, tickets for these shows aren’t expected to be as pricey as those on Broadway.
In 2008, the second annual TeatroStageFest showcased 17 events and 34 performances at 10 different venues in Manhattan, Queens, and The Bronx. Programming, venues, and box office information for this year’s festivities will officially be announced in the spring.
If you haven’t had the experience to explore the artistic richness of our colorful culture, you must make plans to catch at least one performance this year from TeatroStageFest. Perhaps you too will be inspired to create the next great American play, a la Lin-Manuel Miranda.
