Univision, the leading Spanish-language network in the country, recently announced the nominees for the 2009 “Premio Lo Nuestro a la Musica Latina.” Now in its 21st year, the list of nominees includes a variety of genres and artists, reflecting the cultural richness of Latin music. This year’s awards will be broadcast by the Univision Network on Thursday, March 26 from the Bank United Center at the University of Miami.
With finalists in 30 categories divided into the five most popular Latin music genres of pop, tropical, regional Mexican, rock, and urban, awards are bestowed annually to the very best talent in the Latin music industry. The winners are then chosen by viewers.
Leading the list with five nominations each are Colombian mega-star Juanes and Puerto Rican salsa legend Gilberto Santa Rosa. Following with four nominations each are the popular bachata group, Aventura; reggeaton’s super duo, Wisin y Yandel; the ever popular rock band, Mana; the salsa group, NG2; and Regional Mexican icons, El Chapo de Sinaloa and La Arrolladora Banda el Limon.
Univision.com is once again the exclusive online destination for “Premio Lo Nuestro 2009.” The excitement begins this month with online voting, where users choose the winners of this year’s “Premio Lo Nuestro” awards. Fans can log onto Univision.com from January 14th at 11AM through February 5th at 11:59PM ET to vote for their favorites.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2008, “Premio Lo Nuestro” was the highest-rated annual special among Hispanics in the United States with an average audience of 6.1 million viewers, beating all other English or Spanish-language award shows. In addition, “Premio Lo Nuestro” delivered more Hispanic viewers than the combined audiences of the Academy Awards®, Billboard Latin Music Awards, Emmy® Awards, MTV’s Video Music Awards, and the Golden Globes® Awards.
