Britt Bardo isn’t your typical fashionista to the stars. When Jennifer Lopez was looking to do a dramatic makeover, she specifically chose Bardo to become her personal stylist. Since then, Penelope Cruz, Eva Mendes, and Cameron Diaz have all asked this petite blonde to make them look like screen sirens at film premieres, fashion shows, and other exclusive events held around the world. Dita Von Teese, Jessica Simpson, and even the millionaire Olsen twins have selected this now-fashion designer to perfect their looks in time for star-studded, red carpet extravaganzas. Before you pout because a well-renown stylist can’t transform your wardrobe from blah to chic, Bardo happily shares some tips on looking like an A-list star on a D-list budget in 2009.
Britt Bardo's 2009 Styling Tip #1: Always Have a Backup
Remember that night when you were trying to hail a taxi barefoot after shaking it up at that club opening? Stilettos may look perfect for a night out, but a sure fire way to ruin your look is to make a grand entrance limping from blisters. “Shoes are the secret weapon to any outfit, but can also be its biggest enemy,” Bardo explains. “The key is to choose shoes that are sexy, but comfortable.” Now ladies, as much as we love our Manolos, wearing 5-inch heels isn’t a smart idea when you’re planning to get down and dirty on the dance floor. Make sure you carry a pair of flats or flip flops in your purse so your feet can get a breather when it’s time to go home.
Britt Bardo's 2009 Styling Tip #2: Smiling: A Must-Have Accessory
Take careful note because we’re about to reveal the number one fool proof way to look good and get noticed: smile! Getting dumped or losing your job won’t put you in a festive mood, but who really wants to hook up with Grumpy? If you’re worried about your smile, but are terrified to visit your dentist, Bardo recommends making a trip to your local pharmacy. “Brighten up those pearly whites quickly with the latest touch-up teeth whitening treatments,” she states. “Use it for 45 minutes once a day for seven days and your teeth will be visibly whiter in as little as three days.” Remember, a smile can make any wallflower shine like a social butterfly. Also, don’t forget to make an appointment with your dentist for a check up this year, unless your idea of a good time is a root canal.
Britt Bardo's 2009 Styling Tip #3: Create Your Personal Style
If you’ve always dreamed of being a celebrity, forget asking the paparazzi to chase you down the street for a chance to be seen on Page Six. The one thing celebs are indeed good at is creating trends. Us common folk, on the other hand, will buy whatever is in and yet, we fail to realize that popular looks come and go just as quickly. Are you really going to wear those golden knee high gladiator sandals in the summer? Learn to embrace your personal style, not those of Anna Wintour. “Don't be a slave to fashion trends, wear what makes you feel good, comfortable, and confident. Find what works for your body and invest in classic pieces that will flatter for years to come,” states Bardo.
Britt Bardo's 2009 Styling Tip #4: Shop For Basics
Don’t you just hate it when you have to meet with your entourage in five minutes and you can’t seem to find anything to wear? It may be the perfect excuse to go shopping next weekend, but this sudden crisis should also encourage you to stock up on your basics, such as jeans, t-shirts, and anything else that you would wear to help make you look and feel your best. “When you are at a loss for what to wear, stick to well-fitting, chic basics. A great pair of trousers and a simple t-shirt tucked in are dependable outfit home-runs,” she says. “Then, give the outfit some ammunition with bold accessories.”
Britt Bardo's 2009 Styling Tip #5: Glow with Self-Tanners
While some are born with gorgeous, sun kissed skin, others are cursed to look like Michael Jackson. Instead of lying in the sun and absorbing harmful rays or heading to an expensive tanning salon and coming back oompa loompa orange, find other means to light up any room. “Self-tanners can be scary, but the new self-tanners combined with lotion are virtually fool-proof! They are an easy way to get a natural glow without worrying about streaks,” advises Bardo.
Britt Bardo's 2009 Styling Tip #6: Wear Jeans the Right Way
Nothing makes a woman feel sexier than hip hugging jeans that accentuate every curve of her body, making legs leaner and waists tinier. However, the wrong pair of jeans can create an unwanted muffin top, show off a thong that no one wants to see, or reveal a too anatomically correct camel toe. Luckily, jeans come in all colors and sizes, making the hunt for the right pair easier than you think. Whether you prefer Calvins or Levis, skinny or flared, the secret to the perfect pair is in the wash. “Every woman should own a pair of great fitting dark jeans with a touch of stretch for comfort. They can be dressed up or down for day or night,” she states. Not only do dark jeans hide pesky imperfections, but they can be worn dressy or casual with the right shoes and accessories.
Britt Bardo's 2009 Styling Tip #7: Learn to Save
That Oscar De La Renta party dress may make you feel like a million bucks, but does this mean that you should spend a million to look good for one night? Drowning yourself in debt never makes one feel hot, so rise above temptation when shopping for the latest trends. Looking like a star and still having money to attend that sold out concert is priceless. “If you want to try out a trend, but are hesitant to spend a lot of money, look for a similar style at a lower price,” Bardo explains. “With all of the high-end designers doing collections for mass retailers, it is easy to find something fun and low cost.” With designers, such as Betsey Johnson, Erin Fetherston, and Sex and the City’s Patricia Field creating cheaper couture, there’s no reason why you should spend the rest of the year broke! 2009 is a year of change, so take charge and look good doing it too.
