Yesterday we announced that 21-year-old Argentinean stage actress Josefina Scaglione was chosen to play “Maria” in the Broadway revival of West Side Story. Photos have just leaked of what viewers should expect in February, when the show will make its grand premiere.
It’s been reported that many Latinos are complaining that Josefina is a tad bit too white for her character, a young girl from Puerto Rico. Then again, in the 1961 Oscar-winning film, “Maria” was played by the late Natalie Wood, whose parents were Russian immigrants!
Although we can only guess whether the revival will be a hit or miss, at least viewers will have more Latin-themed shows to watch in 2009 than just In The Heights.
