Kinky’s newest album came out of nowhere. I was blindsided by its release, so when I caught wind of its existence, I could hardly think of anything else. There aren’t that many artists worth discussing these days, it’s
as though my expectations have totally diminished. But when it comes to Kinky, the world stops, only to start gyrating with their rhythm. Yes, I’m hyping it up, big time and why not? After you listen to Barracuda you’ll understand why.
It’s safe to say that Kinky is likely to be the biggest/best known Latin electro-rock dance band (delivered to you in two languages) since their self-titled major label release in 2002, which makes the expectations of a good thing very high, and Barracuda does not disappoint.
The first thing that pops out from this record is confidence. The guys come through with extreme maturity and a pristine new-wave sound. They completely honed that spacey sound that we come to love.
There are so many awesome tracks, and only like two glitches (“Those Girls,” “Tus Huellas, Mis Pasos”) but the good ones completely make up for it.
A perfect example of the spacey mature sound I mentioned before is clearly heard on “The Day I lost the bests.” It’s all-instrumental with a rave-like feel, minus the cheesiness of raves.
“Anzuelo” is another great track that has the thrill of a car race while “We Present” feels like a modern-day love story. “Fuego En La Fabrica” exemplifies the uniqueness of Kinky’s synthesized beats. They’re not afraid of changeling their signature tempo and beat in order to explore new ground.
Can’t wait to hear these songs live!
